Winnipeg dogs and their owners can make a splash at Bruce Park on Aug. 29, when Animal Services takes over the wading pool for an afternoon of swimming, playing, and socializing.

 General manager Zoé Austin says the swim gives Winnipeg dogs an opportunity they normally would not have.

"Winnipeg doesn't really have an outdoor space where dogs can go into them in a pool environment," she said.

During their time in the pool, dogs can chase balls, splash around, play with their owners, and socialize with other dogs.

The event is a partnership between Animal Services and the City of Winnipeg's Recreation Services.

Recreation staff operate the Bruce Park wading pool throughout the summer. As the season winds down, Animal Services takes over the pool for the dog-focused event.

The event is divided into time slots based on the size of the dogs.

Dogs weighing under 30 pounds can attend from 10 to 11 a.m. or 11 a.m. to noon. Dogs over 30 pounds can use the pool from 1 to 2 p.m. or 2 to 3 p.m.

Spots are limited

Although the event is free, spaces are limited and must be reserved in advance.

Austin said there are still some spots available this year.

The event is open to licensed dogs only.

Owners can register through Winnipeg's leisure online system or by calling 311.

Dog owners who need to obtain a licence can do so through the City of Winnipeg, by calling 311, or in person at 1057 Logan Ave.

Adoption opportunity

For Winnipeggers who do not currently have a dog, Austin said Animal Services' adoption program could provide another way to get involved.

About 15 dogs are currently available for adoption, with more expected to become available soon, according to Austin.

"We've got small dogs, we've got big dogs, young dogs and old dogs, and they're all looking for homes," she said.
