Winnipeg police's AIR1 helicopter is being credited with spotting a fire Thursday morning in the city's North End.

The blaze broke out just after 1 a.m. in a two-storey multi-family home in the 300 block of Aberdeen Avenue.

Fire spotted from the air

Officers in the Winnipeg Police Service's AIR1 helicopter were flying over the area when they noticed the fire and contacted the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service.

When crews arrived, they found smoke pouring out of the home. Firefighters were able to enter the home and attack the fire from inside.

It was declared under control about 40 minutes later. 

Residents evacuate safely

All occupants evacuated before crews arrived. No injuries were reported.

The City's Emergency Social Services team was activated to provide temporary assistance to displaced residents.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
